Longer Days, Warmer Weather & Busy Walks: Supporting Sensitive Dogs in a Changing Landscape šŸŒžšŸ¾

As the days grow longer and the weather improves, the world around us changes - sometimes in ways our dogs notice more than we do. Paths that were quiet in winter now have more people, more dogs, bikes, and families out enjoying the sunshine. The sights, smells, and sounds create a very different landscape for dogs who are used to calm, predictable environments.

Ā

For sensitive dogs, this shift can feel overwhelming. The nervous system that was once comfortable in quiet can suddenly be on high alert. Overstimulation can show as increased vigilance, pulling on the lead, barking, or avoiding others. These behaviours aren’t ā€œbadā€ - they’re information. They tell us that the dog is experiencing the world as intense and needs support to navigate safely.

Supporting Sensitive Dogs

When the environment changes, we can help our sensitive dogs in gentle and meaningful ways:

  • Predictable transitions: Gradually introduce them to busier areas, keeping distance at first and letting them choose how close to approach.

  • Opportunities for agency: Give dogs choice in how they move through the environment - sniffing, pausing, or stepping back when needed.

  • Regulation tools: A licky mat, slow walks, or brief ACE Free Work sessions in a quieter area before heading out can help them start the walk in a calmer state.

Ā

Supporting Other Dogs

Not all dogs are sensitive to increased activity, and that’s fine. But we can help create a harmonious environment by:

  • Teaching tolerance: Encourage dogs to remain calm and focused when others are alert or reactive.

  • Reading signals: Watching how different dogs communicate helps prevent friction and allows everyone to enjoy the space safely.

  • Sharing the space mindfully: Stepping aside, giving space, and respecting boundaries benefits all dogs and guardians.

Ā

A Community Approach

When we approach busier walks with curiosity instead of frustration, we create a world where all dogs can experience the outdoors safely and joyfully. Sensitive dogs learn that busy doesn’t have to mean unsafe, and confident dogs learn patience and awareness. Guardians learn to read signals, respond thoughtfully, and co-regulate their dogs.

Ā

Longer days and warmer weather are a gift, but for sensitive dogs, the landscape has changed. With observation, patience, and support, we can help them feel safe, regulated, and able to enjoy the world - while helping all the other dogs around them remain calm and connected. šŸŒæšŸ’›

At Alba Dogs, we believe every dog deserves a walk that leaves their nervous system enriched, regulated, and happy - no matter how busy the world outside may be.
