The Importance of Rest – For Us and Our Dogs

As I prepare to travel and spend some much-needed time with my family, I’ll admit something many of you may relate to: the run-up to a break can feel overwhelming. There’s always so much to do. Extra work, organisation, tying up loose ends — it can feel never-ending.
Yet, the thought of slowing down, not clock-watching, and simply being present with my family reminds me why it’s worth it. Time to rest is not a luxury, it’s a necessity — for us, and for our dogs.

Why I Love What I Do
I often reflect on how lucky I am to do this work. I genuinely believe I have one of the most interesting jobs in the world. I get to meet people from all walks of life and, of course, so many wonderful dogs.
Some are tactile and friendly, others are aloof and prefer their space. Some are confident and outgoing, while others are shy, anxious, or nervous. And then there are all the unique personalities in between.
The magic happens when I see growth. Dogs finding self-control, confidence, and self-awareness. Guardians discovering new ways to understand their dogs — and themselves. Watching these shifts unfold is what makes the CPD, the long hours, the evenings, weekends, social media posts, and the constant learning worthwhile.
But Rest Matters Too
As much as I love my work, it’s important to recognise that rest is just as vital as learning and doing. For me, taking a step back helps me return refreshed, ready to give my best to every dog and guardian I work with.
For our dogs, rest is even more crucial. It’s during periods of calm and quiet that they process their experiences, regulate their emotions, and reset their bodies. Without enough rest, they can’t truly learn or grow.
A Gentle Reminder
So, as I take some time away to reset, here’s a reminder I want to share with you:
🌿 Rest is not just good for us — it’s vital for our dogs too.
Whether that means a slower walk, more time for free exploration, or simply a quiet day at home, those pauses make all the difference. They allow us — and our dogs — to find balance, wellbeing, and connection again.
